Cello Teacher, Student
New York City-based cellist Susanna Giles performs throughout the city in a diverse range of venues including Carnegie Hall, the Brooklyn Art Song Society, Art House Productions Theater and St. Bartholomew’s Church. A frequent collaborator, Ms. Giles has performed with artists including Bernard Greenhouse, the Tokyo String Quartet, Emmanuele Baldini, Catalin Rotaru and Ciao Pagano. Ensembles Ms. Giles has been a member of include the Mimesis Ensemble of New York City, the Sheep Island Ensemble andthe Azlo Chamber Orchestra of New York, the Bloomington Camerata Orchestra and the Lyric Opera Theater of Arizona. As an orchestral musician, Ms. Giles has performed under conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Leonard Slatkin, Steven Smith, David Effron and Michael Christi.
Passionate about sharing her love of music through teaching and working with children, Ms. Giles holds a private studio in Manhattan, and teaches at the Lucy Moses School and at the Preparatory Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College. Viewing the study and experience of music as a tool with great potential to enrich a child’s life, Ms. Giles also works with the Harmony Program, teaching children throughout New York City who would not otherwise have access to music instruction.
Receiving merit-based scholarships for all her educational pursuits, Ms. Giles is a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music where she received a Bachelor of Music in cello performance. Ms. Giles holds a Performance Certificate from the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music where she studied with Julia Lichten, and attended the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and the Arizona Sate University Herberger School of Music for graduate studies. Ms. Giles completed the long-term Suzuki Teacher Training course at School for Strings in New York City studying with Pamela Devenport.
