Sarah Kim, cello, leads a vibrant and diverse career as performer, educator and arts administrator. She is an acclaimed instructor who was named 2016 Ohio String Teachers Association Studio Teacher of the Year as well as a recipient of the 2015 Overture Arts Educator Awards by the Cincinnati Arts Association.
Dr. Kim is on faculty at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music serving on both the college and pre-college faculties.  Additionally, Dr. Kim is an Artist Faculty member of the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival in Burlington, Vermont and also on faculty at the 2018 Aria International Summer Academy. As chair of the Suzuki cello program at the UC-CCM Preparatory Department, Dr. Kim has been instrumental in developing programs at the renowned School for Creative and Performing Arts and the Hyde Park Gifted Academy.   In demand as a cello and Suzuki clinician throughout the country, Dr. Kim has given master classes at workshops held at Oklahoma State University, University of Tennessee, Western Kentucky University, and the University of South Carolina as well as numerous Suzuki workshops. She has adjudicated national competitions such as the Music Teachers National Association Junior Competition and presented at the American String Teachers Association national conference. Dr.Kim’s students have soloed with numerous local orchestras and received top prizes and honors in competitions such as the Blue Ash Montgomery Symphony Orchestra, Louisville Orchestra, Cleveland Cello Society, Walgreens National Concerto, and American Protegé competitions. 

As a solo artist and chamber musician, Dr. Kim has performed across the U.S. and Europe in multiple music genres. She continues to be an active performer in the Cincinnati area.  She has performed with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Louisville Orchestra, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra and as guest principal cello of the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra. She performs regularly in chamber music and as a duo with her husband, Alan Rafferty, Professor of Cello at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. A native of Minneapolis, MN, Dr. Kim studied with Peter Howard, Principal Cellist Emeritus of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, before attending the Eastman School of Music for Cello Performance under the tutelage of Steven Doane where she received a B.M. in Cello Performance. Dr. Kim attended Northwestern University and received a M.M. in Cello Performance with Hans Jorgen Jensen. In addition to extensive training in the Suzuki Method, Dr. Kim received her D.M.A. at University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music with a cognate in Pedagogy. Dr. Kim is the Executive Director of the Cincinnati Young Artists, a nationally recognized program presenting advanced chamber music and cello workshops for pre-college and college students throughout the year.
