Raised in rural Pennsylvania, Rachel began Suzuki cello at age 4 at Ithaca Talent Education. Despite living in a small community, she was active in any type of music offered…and also enjoyed choirs and bands. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Pennsylvania State University and went on to study music history and historical performance at the graduate level. She plays cello (including Baroque), viola da gamba and sings in professional choirs. Rachel’s “day job” is equally fulfilling––she is faculty at Settlement Music School’s Early Childhood Music department where she teaches music/musicianship to almost one hundred preschoolers a week. She also maintains an active, private cello studio out of her Philadelphia home.

Earlier in her career, Rachel took a planned “detour” to study yoga, mediation and other Eastern modalities with the goal of teaching musicians better body/mind awareness practices. She integrates these practices into her teaching, even with her youngest students.

In addition to her Suzuki training, Rachel holds certifications in multiple early childhood methods including First Steps in Music and Orff. Currently, she enjoys learning about the science of music cognition. She lives with her two young boys––ages 4 and 7––who are also Suzuki students and her two cats (who have yet to learn their Twinkles).
