Beginning Suzuki violin in her elementary school program, Katie cannot remember a time she did not play the violin. She received her Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance at Southern Methodist University and her Master of Music degree in Violin Performance and Suzuki Pedagogy studying with Mark Bjork at the University of Minnesota. In the fall of 2001, she became faculty at the MacPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis where she coordinated the Suzuki string groups and orchestras. In 2013, Katie and her family relocated to Michigan where she runs a private Suzuki studio and is assistant concertmaster of the Holland Symphony and a member of the West Michigan Symphony. Katie has received additional Suzuki mentorship from Katherine Wood, Alice Joy Lewis, Beth Titterington, Ann Montzka Smelser, Allen Lieb, Teri Einfeldt, Cathryn Lee, Christie Felsing and Pat D’Ercole with whom she completed the long term Suzuki Mentorship Program. Katie has taught at Suzuki workshops in the Midwest, including Blue Lake Suzuki Family Camp, and her students have won awards through the Schubert Club, the Suzuki Association of Minnesota and MacPhail’s Concerto Competition. Katie is a Suzuki parent of two fun loving children (a violinist and cellist), and considers that part of her on going training.
