Karen Barg began her violin training with Joanne Martin at the age of 4 through Suzuki Music Winnipeg Inc. She continued her studies with Jack Glatzer and Gwen Hoebig (concert master of WSO) in Winnipeg while attending the University of Manitoba, and Madame Gho at McGill University in Montreal.

Karen enjoys performing as a professional freelance violinist with the WSO, TBSO, various Winnipeg ensembles including her own The Luminous String Quartet (www.luminousstringquartet.ca) as well as various touring artists who have performed in Winnipeg like Sarah Brightman, Il Divo, Anne Murray, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Honeymoon Suite, Michael Bublé and Disturbed. Since 1998, she has also enjoyed expanding her stylistic genres of rock, pop, folk, country and jazz which has been fostered further by working with multi Juno winner Fred Penner since 2010 as a 5-string electric violinist and backup singer in his Cat’s Meow Band.

As much as Karen enjoys performing, she is also passionate about arranging music for ensembles—especially for her Luminous String Quartet—in the pop/rock genres as well as Movie/TV themes. Luminous recorded 11 Canadian Classic Rock songs arranged by Karen and released the CD in March 2020.

Beginning her Suzuki Teacher Training in 1998, Karen has obtained training from Pat D’Ercole, Joanne Martin, Paule Barsalou and Karen Kimmit as well as a SPA session with Joanne Melvin, and looks forward to further training. She also created a small Suzuki program, along with Judi Price-Rosen, called The Keystone Suzuki Strings which was in existence from 2002 until 2007. Karen held the position of Program Coordinator for Suzuki Music Winnipeg from 2012—2017 and currently enjoys teaching her Suzuki students and performing with and arranging for her Luminous String Quartet.
