Teachers throughout history, from Shinichi Suzuki all the way back to Leopold Mozart, have understood the incredible power a student’s environment has on their development. Whether it’s constantly hearing their mother tongue language or listening to engaging music, immersion in a rich environment molds children in profound ways, well beyond what can be accomplished through any exercises or assignments. In this issue of the American Suzuki Journal, we will explore the idea of the Influential Environment.

  • What shapes a student?

  • What are the strongest factors in students’ worlds? How is this different now than it was 5, 10, or 50 years ago?

  • How can teachers curate a student’s musical and educational environment?

  • What techniques and assignments do you use to populate a student’s world?

  • How can we empower parents to cultivate a vibrant educational world for their children?

  • How do we foster open-mindedness and inclusivity in our students’ environments?
