Event Description
This course will explore components of Bluegrass fiddling including: historical aspects, jamming, and fiddle techniques such as slides, improvised licks, double-stops, chopping, and bowings.
Suzuki teachers will learn how to incorporate fiddle tunes into their studio with ease, following the format used in “Fiddlin’ Favorites,” a series of books written by Lisa and Derek Deakins and licensed by the ISA.
Tuition includes both volumes of “Fiddlin’ Favorites”.
100% participation is required for course registration with the SAA.

Derek Deakins is a fiddler, violinist, and registered Suzuki violin teacher originally from Kingsport, Tennessee. His musical journey began with Suzuki violin lessons at age five and has taken him around the world as a professional musician. Derek has performed all over the world in venues ranging from Madison Square Garden to the Grand Ole Opry.
Derek graduated from Belmont University (B.M. in Instrumental Music Education) and East Carolina University (M.M. in Orchestral Conducting). Derek has performed with major recording artists including The Osborne Brothers, James Monroe, Mac Wiseman, Charlie Daniels, and Blake Shelton. He has made several television appearances and four solo recordings.
When Derek is not teaching private lessons or performing, he is playing guitar and singing in his bluegrass and acoustic trio called Gravel Road. Visit www.derekdeakins.com
