Event Description
Nearly a century after its initial publication, Carl Flesch’sScale Systemremains one of the most imminent works in violin pedagogy. This comprehensive collection of exercises features the 24 Major and minor scales, with an emphasis on both double-stops and arpeggios. This seminar will examine how to break down the challenges in this book to their most embryonic form (intonation, shifting, rhythm, knowledge of the fingerboard and positions, string crossing, bow speed and weight, contact points, and tone production), and will illustrate how to present this material to students so that all can benefit from the technical foundation it can build. When teachers develop an organized approach to teaching scale studies, students can experience breakthroughs in their technique and new possibilities emerge. Example scale sequences for students studying in Suzuki Books 4 – 8 will be shared.
