Do you have group lessons in the summer months or take a break from them?

Hah! Funny you should bring this up. I’ve always let Groups go during the summer in the past. It’s disrupting having students come and go week to week with everyone’s different vacation schedules.

HOWEVER……………

My students got so jazzed by Barcel Brioso’s performance that we’re indeed having a group this summer. Mondays 3:30—4:30. Students must commit 100% to all 8 Mondays. The last will be a performance that will include costumes and choreography. We’ll have the concert recorded and posted on http://www.myviolinvideos.com at the end of the summer.

What my students truly enjoyed about Barcel Brioso was the variety of music depicting different nationalities, the costumes and choreography. Here’s a link to their recent concert. http://myviolinvideos.com/barcelbrioso.html

I’m truly hoping that this summer’s group experience will plant the seed for strong group interest in the Fall. I’ve got wonderful students and it would be so engaging for them to have a performing group that they could belong to and call their own. I’ll pick out the music but they’ll be part of the creative process with the choreography and costumes. There has been a lot of questions about “who else” is participating and “what book” they’re in. I’m smiling during this process because I know the outcome will transcend these perceived limits.

I will add here that our local student orchestra situation is weak. Being a lifelong orchestral player this has been frustrating. I’ve also recognized that “I can’t do it all” and have chosen not to get involved in the local student orchestra situations.

That said—I am extremely excited about creating this performing group for my students

Here’s my report! We had our final concert on Monday.

5 students had signed up and committed to all 8 Mondays 3:30—4:30.
1 student had to drop due to a family emergency. Due to the emergency—something out of their control -I chose to refund their money.
The rest did indeed come to each class. I charged $100 per student.

The repertoire:
Perpetual Motion, Witches’ Dance, Humoresque
Firoliralera—Mexican duet
Happy Blues—Duet with 1 student pizz. the blues chords
O How Lovely is the Evening—Round from Starr’s book of rounds
Cripple Creek with 2 part harmony

The fun:
Dancing the Witches’ Dance
Kids bringing costumes from home and figuring out how to use them for the concert.
Enjoying the ensemble playing, the harmonies, dancing, and different styles of music.

The party:
We called the final concert a Violin Party. Students who could not participate in the class came, friends and family. After we demonstrated the Witches’ Dance, everyone joined us. We then invited anyone who brought a violin and played a few book 1 songs. Relays were a blast. We passed a cup with our bows, balanced Cheerios on our tips and balanced marbles in the pegbox of the violin. Everyone won two gold ribbons. One to tie onto the violin scroll, one to tie onto the bow. Cookies and social time to finish. (All the cookies were eaten!)

The education:
When the kids first received the music they were pretty overwhelmed and some had doubts. By the end they all had their music confidently memorized to the point where they were keeping me in check!
Listening to each other was a huge education.
All these kids had their first experience with harmony—not just unison.
Feeling tempo together vastly improved!

The videos of the concert (complete with traffic noise, trains and poor lighting!):

Your Welcome! It was fun!

A big reason it was filmed was to show it to the students who were unable to attend and generate interest in what group classes can offer.
