I thought I would reach out and see if there is a studio that would be interested in becoming a studio pen pal with my studio (Denver, CO). I thought it would be great for students to connect with another studio via letters, pictures, videos, practice ideas, etc. to see what other Suzuki kids do! My hope is that this will allow students to feel a part of a greater community outside of their local Suzuki community even during the school year.

Hm, that sounds like an interesting idea. How big is your studio?

I currently have around 30 students with a core group of around 20 Suzuki students (I have a few adult students and transfer students). I was thinking more of a studio pen pal as opposed to 1 to 1 student pen pals, but it would be cool if some of the families who were interested could have a specific pen pal as well.

Andrea,

My 11 year old daughter has been looking for a pen pal. She is in Suzuki
book 5, Orchestra and studies Old-Time fiddle music too. We are members of the Wyoming Suzuki program located in Cincinnati, Ohio. Please let me know if
you have someone in your group that would be interested in being pen pals with her. Thanks.

Ronald,

I do have someone that could be a good fit (Suzuki viola), but we are going on our spring break. I will ask next time I see them, but I also just found this FaceBook group to connect pen pals that you may want to check out.

Sounds like fun. I know my students would get into that. PM me if you’re still looking!

Happy practicing,
Edward

I recently noticed on facebook that a couple of years ago Glenda Gail Walsh Crouse started a program for studio-to-studio pen pals and tried to follow up with her, to no response. My sense is that this went dormant but I am definitely interested in the idea and I have one 11 year old beginner (girl) who is interested. The premise of Glenda’s program is that mail is sent from one studio to another so that no personal information is exchanged at first—that would be up to the individuals to determine later, if they feel comfortable. It was really cute; she set up a real “mailbox” in the studio with mail slots for each participating student. Young students could send one another pictures :-) Students interested in learning/practicing another language could request a pen pal in another country. I wrote to the ESA as my student is interested in corresponding in German, French, and Italian, as well as English. The ESA suggested contacting individual teachers through their Find-a-Teacher platform. Please let me know if you are interested in connecting on this project. I am based in the Greater Toronto Area (Canada). Long live the art of letter writing :-)
