Dear fellow experienced teachers,
Please share with me how you ran your studio when you were expecting a baby in the middle of the semester. I am expecting a first child in February and I have to start having parents register for the 2013-2014 year. FYI, I plan on breastfeeding. Did you just take off several weeks? Did you find a substitute?
I would really appreciate your experience!!!

Congratulations on your first baby!

My experience with our first was the same as you describe yours will be. I did take several weeks off, and was fortunate to have my parents living nearby so that one of them could tend to baby while I taught. I pumped so they could feed her, and was able to limit my teaching time to maybe 2-3 hrs. at a time (small studio).
My husband’s schedule was also somewhat flexible so he was able to fill in too.
I could not have taught without this help, so I think that’s the key. On occasion, I did need to have the baby in a swing/ bouncer nearby for a lesson or two…the piano moms were thrilled :)

Congratulations! I didn’t take very much time off when I had my son in 2011. I had a friend do masterclass lessons for me on weekends for the 5-6 weeks that I was off. I did that just to keep my students going while I was out. They paid her directly, and she taught at my home studio so that they didn’t have to deal with traveling to her. It worked out great, and I would do it again if I had to. I also put him in his pack n play when needed, and the parents loved having him to cuddle with. Good luck!

Thank you Lori Bolt and Marissa Murphy for sharing your experience! My husband will get a maternity leave for few weeks too so that will be helpful. I teach at my parent’s basement so I could get their help as well. Marissa, I like the weekend masterclass idea. I will need to contact teachers in the area to see if they can offer it for me. Thanks again!
