Does anyone know of violin makers or dealers in Romania? I have a student traveling there who would like to buy a violin while she is there.

I would strongly urge your student to reconsider her desire to buy a violin abroad. She will likely have to pay a steep import tariff at the US border when she returns home with her new instrument. After she gets it home, if she discovers flaws or anything she wants the luthier or dealer to correct or change, she will have no recourse. For instance, she may discover she doesn’t care for the sound of the violin in the acoustics of her home, or the thickness or texture of the neck. It is too expensive to ship the violin back to the Romanian luthier, and so one way or the other, she will be stuck with it, and have to pay for someone else do what the seller would have done for free. I think she would do much better to buy here. There are very good, inexpensive instruments to be found in violin shops across the US. She would save herself a great deal of trouble.

I speak from personal experience. You may call or write to me if you want to discuss this further. My contact info can be found on my teacher page.

Of course, if purchasing a Romanian violin is of special importance to her, and she is well versed in the language and knowledgeable enough about how to select a good instrument that is also an excellent value, then she should go ahead and try, but still be aware of some hidden costs and hassles that may spring up when or after returning home.
