Vivian McDermott is a violist in the Lubbock Symphony and works as a private and sectional teacher in the Lubbock area. Before moving to Texas, Vivian served as a section violinist in the Jackson Symphony in Jackson, Tennessee. Other orchestral engagements include, the Amarillo Symphony, the West Texas Symphony, the North Mississippi Symphony, principal second violinist/violist of the University of Memphis orchestra, the Hot Springs Music Festival Orchestra, Brevard Music Festival Orchestra, Eastern Music Festival Orchestra, Miami Music Festival Orchestra, Interlochen Faculty Orchestra, and the Germantown Symphony Orchestra. As a soloist, Vivian has played in recitals in Tennessee, Texas, Florida, and Michigan. She has also performed in an online master class led by David Kim. Vivian was a member of the Loraine String Quartet, the graduate string quartet at the University of Memphis. During her undergraduate years, Vivian was sought out as a violist, playing in her university’s string quartets. She often “doubled” in both violin and viola in these quartets. Outside of performing, Vivian has extensive experience as a teacher. She has worked as a supplemental instructor for the Frenship School District, since 2023. In her hometown of Memphis, she worked as a teacher at the Faith Music Academy in Bartlett, TN, and a supplemental violin/viola instructor at Collierville School District. During the summers of 2022 and 2023, Vivian worked as a teaching assistant at the Interlochen School for the Arts, leading sectionals in the junior and intermediate orchestras. From 2026 until 2018, she has taught at W.O. Smith Music School in Nashville, Tennessee. One of the more significant events during her undergraduate years was her job at her university’s string department assistant where she worked under her teacher, Elisabeth Small. She holds degrees from Belmont University, the University of Memphis, and Texas Tech University. Her primary teachers include. Annie Chalex-Boyle, Phillippe Chao, Lenny Schranze, Timothy Shiu, Elisabeth Small, and Sarah Cote.
