Cello Unit 3 “The Last 25%: Completing the Foundation” focuses on developing expressive playing, refined bow control, and greater technical independence. This unit builds upon the foundational skills from Books 1 and 2 expanding left hand techniques such as vibrato and shifting, and bowing articulations. The repertoire emphasizes tone production, phrasing, and stylistic awareness.

Participants will study the repertoire, with attention to:

  • Advanced bow strokes and nuanced tone production
  • Expanding left-hand facility, shifting, and vibrato development
  • Musical phrasing, articulation, and stylistic interpretation
  • Refinement of posture, balance, and coordination
  • Teaching strategies appropriate for intermediate Suzuki students

Also discussed are reading progression and positions, developing a scale routine, supporting parents, and group classes. Book 3 is the bridge between foundational training and intermediate-level study, preparing teachers to help their cellists work more independently, creatively, and musically. Designed for long-term training, but can be stand-alone course.

This six-week course meets Thursdays from 8:00 am to 10:30 am (Pacific) from January 28 through March 11, 2027 with the exception of 2/25 (SAA Leadership Conference, Chicago).

The performance practical occurs outside of class.

Requirements: 100% attendance; 15 hours of class; 8 hours of observation; play book from memory; synthesis exam; book report.
