Please note that in 2026, as part of a pilot program, the SAA is highly encouraging, but not requiring, an audition for Unit 1 training. Learn more about the pilot at this link.

Our goal is to make the audition process supportive and inclusive while determining eligibility for course participation. We understand that as busy students, musicians, and artists, you may have other repertoire prepared. Passing a Violin audition allows applicants to take Viola Units 1 & 2. To take Viola Unit 3 or beyond, you must pass a Viola audition.

Voice

All voice auditions require transcripts of vocal and musical studies, with a minimum of 3 years completed towards any of the following : Bachelor of Music Vocal Performance or Bachelor of Music Education with significant private voice study or Bachelor of Arts degree with music-related coursework and significant private voice study; or the equivalent. You will include a link to your transcripts as part of your audition submission.

Auditors are not allowed for Suzuki Voice coursework.

Basic Audition (Units 1-4)
Pre-recorded or live accompanists accepted. Record and submit the following video recordings:

  • Unaccompanied (choice of key according to applicant’s preference):
  • Fleischmann: Wiegenlied (Schlafe mein Prinzchen, es ruhn), one verse in German. Suzuki Voice Volume 1, No. 12
  • Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, one verse in the applicant’s native language
  • Accompanied and in original language. The following six songs in the original language with all verses unless stated otherwise. Choice of key according to the applicant’s preference.
  • Scarlatti, A.: Giâ il sole dal Gange [Parisotti realization/Schirmer edition]
  • Schumann: Marienwürmchen, Op. 79 No.13, two verses only
  • Revueltas: El Caballito, No. 1 ‘Cinco canciones para niños’
  • Massenet: Bonne Nuit, Op. 2 No. 1, two verses only
  • Copland: Simple Gifts, No. 4 ‘Old American Songs First Set’
  • An Aria of the applicant’s choice (in original language)
  • Piano Proficiency Skills:
  • Fleischmann: Wiegenlied (Schlafe mein Prinzchen, es ruhn), Suzuki Voice volume 1, No. 12. Your choice of either:
  • The original piano score (as written) OR
  • Right Hand melody with improvised left-hand accompaniment (no interlude required; extensive harmony not required; we are looking for the ability to accompany the RH melody with simple basic LH harmony)

Intermediate Audition (Units 5 -7)
Pre-recorded accompaniments accepted unless stated otherwise. Record and submit the following video recordings:

  • Recitative Audition. Live accompanist required. Choice of key according to the applicant’s preference. Baroque-style ornamentation is permitted, though not required.
  • José de Orejón y Aparicio: ‘Ya que el sol misterioso’, recitative from ‘Mariposa de sus rayos’ ; score available in 4 keys here for download.
  • Accompanied and in original language. The following six songs in the original language with all verses unless stated otherwise. Choice of key according to the applicant’s preference.
  • Chabrier: Villanelle des petits canards
  • Schubert: Ave Maria (Ellens Gesang III, D. 839, Op. 52 No. 6), one verse only.
  • Arias, Clotilde: Huiracocha (aka Wiracocha at imslp.org)
  • Caccini: Amarilli, mia bella. Live accompanist required. Baroque-style ornamentation is permitted, though not required.
  • Britten: The trees they grow so high. (fr. Folksong Arrangements Vol.1: British Isles). Live accompanist required.
  • Handel: Come and Trip It (fr. L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato). Solo portion only; subsequent choral portion is not required but is permitted if it is included in the applicant’s solo arrangement edition.

Comprehensive Audition (Units 1-7)
Pre-recorded accompaniments accepted unless stated otherwise. Memorization not required unless stated otherwise. Record and submit the following video recordings:

  • Unaccompanied (two pieces total, one verse each, and choice of key according to applicant’s preference):
  • Fleischmann: Wiegenlied (Schlafe mein Prinzchen, es ruhn), one verse in German. Suzuki Voice Volume 1, No. 12
  • Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, one verse in the applicant’s native language
  • Recitative Audition. Live accompanist required. Recitative only, not the aria. Choice of key according to the applicant’s preference. Baroque-style ornamentation is permitted, though not required.
