In Memoriam: Moyah Anne Gibson, Suzuki Pioneer in Jamaica

For 35 years a woman named Moyah Anne Gibson taught the violin in Kingston, Jamaica, having brought the Suzuki method to the island in 1982. She passed away suddenly on April 13, 2017. Her passing went unnoticed by the larger Suzuki community but not by the many former students and friends who gathered to celebrate her with stories and music.[url=#_edn1][1][/url]

A poem by Miss Gibson was published in the American Suzuki Journal in 2008, v. 37 no. 1. Titled “A Music Teacher’s Prayer,” it mentioned Susan Ashby as a long-time friend of her program, which included the all-violin Twinkle Ensemble and the founding of the Jamaica Young People’s Symphony in 2005.

Ms. Ashby recalls: “I came to know her because a family that was living in Jamaica moved to Puerto Rico.Moyah came to Puerto Rico for one of our workshops and I was happy to also visit her program one time.

“It was amazing what she accomplished with few resources. She had wonderful visions for those students and went to great lengths to make those visions a reality. It was obvious how much she loved those children and how much they loved her.”

Miss Gibson’s creativity and output were notable. She published her memoirs, called Ripples: The Power of Influence in 2014. Previously she had authored a music workbook (published in 1992), and a board game for her students was mentioned in the online account of the memorial held upon her passing.

Miss Gibson leaves behind many ripples, particularly in the persons of former students who continue her legacy.

A MUSIC TEACHER’S PRAYER

Dear God,

PLEASE help me to keep calm and composed

for my concert with my students.

PLEASE keep me feeling well

so that I can handle anything

that might occur.

PLEASE help the younger students to behave

so that my patience will not be tested.

PLEASE help me to concentrate on my music

and not be distracted by events around me.

PLEASE help me to elevate my mind and thoughts

via the sound of music

so that my students and I

will be a symbol of your love.

I REALIZE that it is not possible to please everyone

and that perhaps things might not go as planned,

but please let all problems solve themselves

so that the majority of those involved will be happy.

PLEASE let hearts be lightened listening to us

and let them not focus on flaws

but rejoice in the effort we will spend

for their entertainment.

THANK YOU for my students and their parents

and for surrounding me with the wonderful

world of music.

PLEASE bring your spirit of love

into the room with us

and stay with us forevermore.

“Era impresionante ver lo que lograba con pocos recursos. Ella tenía una visión maravillosa para esos estudiantes y fue a grandes longitudes para convertir esas visiones en realidad. Era obvio lo mucho que amaba esos niños y cómo ellos la amaban a ella.”

La creatividad y la producción de Miss Gibson fueron notables. Ella publicó sus memorias, llamada “Ripples: The Power of Influence” (Ondas: el Poder de la Influencia) en el 2014. Previamente ella autorizó un libro de ejercicios de música (publicado en 1992), y un juego de mesa para sus estudiantes fue mencionado en una cuenta en línea del memorial luego de su fallecimiento.

Miss Gibson deja atrás muchas ondas, particularmente en las personas que fueron sus estudiantes quienes continúan su legado.

Querido Dios,

POR FAVOR ayúdame a mantener la calma y la compostura
