Cello Unit 5 “Leveling Up: Style, Substance, and Artistic Voice” marks a significant artistic and technical turning point in Suzuki cello study. We will explore how to develop the singing style, expressive maturity, and growing independence in our students as they move fully into the middle‑intermediate repertoire. At this level, technique and musicianship converge, and students are challenged to perform with personal commitment, stylistic awareness, and refined musical intention.

We will discuss the development of efficient practice habits, musical problem‑solving, and student ownership of learning. How to establish scale and arpeggio routines, alongside etudes and supplementary materials, to reinforce technique within a musical context.

We will also discuss the evolving roles of student, parent, and teacher during the middle‑intermediate years, including motivation, goal‑setting, performance preparation, group lesson design, and maintaining connection to Suzuki philosophy as students assume greater responsibility for their progress.

This six-week course meets Tuesdays from 8:00 am to 10:30 am (Pacific) from October 6 through November 10, 2026.

The performance practical occurs outside of class.

Requirements: 100% attendance; 15 hours of class; 8 hours of observation; play book from memory; synthesis exam; book report.

Online observations and the book report are to be completed BEFORE the first class.

Designed for long-term training, but may be taken as a stand-alone course.
