Welcome to Unit 1! “STOP-PREPARE-PLAY”

We’ll take it step by step as we build strong foundations together.

In this hands-on course, you’ll learn practical strategies to set up your students for success from the very first lesson. Our journey from the start to the end of Book 1 will help you build a clear approach to pedagogy, repertoire, technique, and developing artistry—starting at the earliest levels.

In addition, we’ll discuss a variety of topics, including practice partners, setting up your studio business, teaching segments, reading, and group classes. This course is designed to offer support and mentorship for your professional development and to build community with colleagues. It is packed full of meaningful content, and by the end you’ll have practical tools to move forward in your teaching with confidence.

You must be logged in to your SAA account and have Active Membership to join the course roster and pay the nonrefundable $20 deposit, below.

This ten-week course meets on Thursdays from 8:00 am to 11:00 am (Pacific) from September 3 through November 12, 2026 EXCEPT for 10/01.


Three 15-minute performance practicals: one is video submission, two are live performance. You will set up a beginning student and play the book 1 repertoire from memory.


To receive course credit, participants are expected to meet the following: 100% attendance; 28 hours of class; 15 hours online observations; two book reports; two synthesis exams; performing the book from memory; two written assignments.


Reading of Nurtured by Love and Ability Development from Age Zero and the reading reflection report may be completed before the first class, and is highly recommended.


Designed for long-term training but may be taken as a stand-alone course.
