My daughter and I just got back from a wonderful summer institute and we want our experience to continue! Are there events throughout the school year that we can attend? We live in upstate NY.

Some places offer weekend mid-winter institutes. I haven’t heard of people traveling great distances to them, and it’s not exactly like a summer institute.

Usually these institutes are divided by instrument. Your child gets two or three mini-lessons with a guest teacher and several medium and large group classes with other guest teachers. In the large groups these teachers may be experimenting with songs they’d like to use at institutes during the summer. On the last day there is a concert, sometimes a solo recital as well.

These were fun and interesting for me, a nice change from same-ol, but not much more. Summer institutes have a time advantage and can host a variety of professional-level performances through the week. Students meet new friends and spend five days playing with them. Etc.
