Are there any plans concerning summer institutes? It now looks as if we may be in this for the long haul and people need to begin making plans.

Most of what we do could be done on line via Skype or some other program. Student observations could be done with videos of teacher trainers working with their own students. Any thoughts on this? The only component we would miss would be the ensembles and the concerts, plus the face to face contact with other teachers, etc.

Students would miss the value of attending the institutes, but at least teacher training would not be interrupted.

The word from American Suzuki Institute is that is will go on as planned. My daughter successfully auditioned for Interlochen and they have repeatedly communicated that the summer camp will go on. Beyond those two, I don’t know.

Of course, much is not known about what will happen to disease incidence. If we can all hold out for another several weeks, then summer plans may be realized.

It is now April 21, and in Canada, we are still in lockdown. Lessons and groups have been on line for the last month. Covid cases in the US and Canada are still a great unknown, in many areas still increasing. Travel restrictions may still be in place in the summer. June is only 2 months away. I would think that planning on going on business as usual is not a good idea.

I agree that a decision must be made soon. Those who are running Institutes have money invested and contracts to honour. To wait too long could be asking for disaster. Borders are closed between Canada and the USA so travel is restricted. I wonder if it is realistic to expect that this summer will be business as usual. Some kind of online alternative should be explored, especially for Teacher Training courses.

Yes, maybe doesn’t need to be cancelled, but re-imagined on another platform.

The University of Wisconsin Stevens Point website says that all campus events are canceled through June. A decision will be made by May 15th regarding whether this cancellation will be extended. I plan to keep my ears and eyes open for more information about Suzuki Camp at Stevens Point after May 15th.
