Thank you, so much! This is a pet peeve of mine which I wish could be corrected in the Suzuki books.

If you look at the original manuscript by Marais, there is a florid dedication to Lully, on whom he lavishes high praise. Clearly this is a case of the student dedicating a work to his teacher.

Here’s a facsimile of the dedication page from the 1ere livre—the one containing the “Lully Gavotte”:

As an aside the recordings of Marais’ works for viola da gamba by Jordi Savall are particularly fine.
