Voice

All voice auditions require transcripts of vocal and musical studies, with a minimum of 3 years completed towards any of the following : Bachelor of Music Vocal Performance or Bachelor of Music Education with significant private voice study or Bachelor of Arts degree with music-related coursework and significant private voice study; or the equivalent.

Basic Audition (Units 1-4)
Live accompanist preferred but not required; pre-recorded accompaniments accepted unless stated otherwise. Memorization not required unless stated otherwise. Record and submit the following video recordings:

  • Unaccompanied (two pieces total, one verse each, and choice of key according to applicant’s preference):
  • Flies, Bernhard (18th century): Wiegenlied (Schlafe mein Prinzchen, schlafe ein), sung in German. Can be found in Pathways of Song, Vol. 1 or Mozart Lieder K. 350, Peters Edition.
  • Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, sung in the applicant’s native language
  • Accompanied and in original language. The following six songs in the original language with all verses. Choice of key according to the applicant’s preference.
  • Scarlatti, Alessandro (1660—1725): Giâ il sole dal Gange (1680) [standard Parisotti realization; i.e., Schirmer edition]
  • Schumann, Robert (1810—1856): Marienwürmchen,: Marienwürmchen, Op. 79 No.13 (1849)
  • Revueltas, Silvestre (1899—1940): El: El Caballito, No. 1 ‘Cinco canciones para niños’ (1939)
  • Massenet, Jules (1842—1912): Bonne: Bonne Nuit, Op. 2 No. 1 (1868)
  • Copland, Aaron (1900—1990): Simple: Simple Gifts, No. 4 ‘Old American Songs First Set’ (1950)
  • An Aria of the applicant’s choice (in original language)
  • Piano Proficiency Skills:
  • Flies, Bernhard (18th century): Wiegenlied (Schlafe mein Prinzchen, schlafe ein). Can be found
    in Pathways of Song, Vol. 1 or Mozart Lieder K. 350, Peters Edition). Your choice of either:
  • The original piano score (as written) OR
  • Right Hand melody with improvised Left-Hand accompaniment (no interlude required; extensive harmony not required; we are looking for the ability to accompany the RH melody with simple basic LH harmony)

Intermediate Audition (Units 5 -7)
Requires satisfactory completion of all of the above. Record and submit the following video recordings:

  • Recitative Audition. Live accompanist required. Recitative only, not the aria. Choice of key according to the applicant’s preference. Baroque-style ornamentation is permitted, though not required.
  • José de Orejón y Aparicio (c.1706—1765) ‘Ya que el sol misterioso’, recitative from ‘Mariposa de sus rayos’ ; Score (in 4 different keys) is available from SAA Voice Committee on request.
  • Accompanied and in original language. The following seven songs in the original language with all verses. Choice of key according to the applicant’s preference.
  • Chabrier, Alexis‐Emmanuel (1841—1894): Villanelle des petits canards
  • Duke, John (1899—1954): Loveliest of Trees
  • Schubert, Franz (1797—1828): Ave Maria (Ellens Gesang III, D. 839, Op. 52 No. 6, 1825)
  • Arias, Clotilde (1901—1959): Huiracocha (aka Wiracocha at imslp.org)
  • Caccini, Giulio (1546—1614): Amarilli, mia bella. Live accompanist required. Deviation from the
    printed score for purposes of Baroque-style ornamentation is permitted, though not required.
  • Britten, Benjamin (1913—1976): The trees they grow so high. (fr. Folksong Arrangements
    Volume 1: British Isles    ). Live accompanist required.
  • Handel, George Freiderich (1685—1759): Come and Trip It (fr. L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il
    Moderato    ). Solo portion only; subsequent choral portion is not required but is permitted
    if it is included in the applicant’s solo arrangement edition.
