Violin/Viola Unit 1

The Unit 1 Course offers a foundational introduction to the Suzuki teaching philosophy and the pedagogy of Pre-Twinklers through Book 1 on violin and/or viola. The program includes:
- In‐class instruction (28 hours) plus required observation of lessons (15 hours).
- Comprehensive study of topics such as: Suzuki philosophy and its rationale; parent/caregiver involvement in a Suzuki studio; listening and home‐practice strategies; pre‐reading and reading skills; tone and posture; group class structure in addition to individual private teaching; how to build a nurturing studio community and manage the business/organizational side of teaching.
- Format is presented in person at Colby College in Waterville, Maine
Prerequisites: completion of an introductory course such as Every Child Can! (ECC) or its equivalent. Active membership in the regional Suzuki association is encouraged. It is strongly recommended that participants memorize the pieces in the Suzuki Violin/Viola Book 1 repertoire book, and purchase or download reference recordings of the pieces prior to the beginning of the course. 100% attendance is required for registration of any SAA courses.
Participants should expect to play on their instrument during this course.
