We are excited to share expanded options for delivering the Every Child Can! (ECC) course, offering greater flexibility and accessibility while maintaining its role as an engaging introduction to Suzuki principles. Course organizers can now choose between the following options, based on their specific circumstances and needs of their audience:
- A 6-hour, one-day course, or
- An 8-hour, two-day course,
Both formats can be delivered in person or online, offering greater accessibility to participants. We encourage all course organizers to schedule active breaks to allow participants to remain focused and energized through the duration of the course, regardless of delivery and format.
Why are these options available?
In 2020, ECC underwent a revision and expansion to include additional discussion/activities related to tone, listening, the Suzuki triangle, group learning, music literacy, Suzuki Early Childhood Education, Suzuki in the Schools, and the SAA Aspirational Code of Ethics. The course was lengthened to 8 hours, to allow ample time for discussion and to accommodate the newness of online learning within the Suzuki community.
The SAA recognizes the value of investing 8 hours into these important topics and encourages course organizers to opt for an 8-hour course, especially when delivering the course online.
The flexibility to offer a 6-hour course comes in response to feedback from course hosts, including Teacher Trainers in university settings, Chapter Affiliates, and Institute Directors, and is aimed at improving accessibility while fulfilling the purposes of ECC.
- Efficient and Effective: A 6-hour, one-day format has proven effective, particularly for in-person settings.
- Accessible for Participants: This format allows broader participation in-person, especially for those facing travel, work, or time constraints.
- Diverse Needs: Many participants, including university students and emerging educators, value manageable course options to balance with other commitments while engaging with the Suzuki community.
Unified Course Materials
Both formats use the current version of the ECC course materials, revised in 2020, ensuring consistency in the participant experience. Participant manuals are distributed in PDF format, with hard copies available for in-person courses. The facilitator’s guide is available only in PDF format.
Supporting Accessibility and Engagement
The availability of these options allows ECC to reach a broader audience while maintaining its welcoming and accessible approach to Suzuki education. Trainers are encouraged to choose the format that best aligns with their participants’ needs and circumstances.
We look forward to supporting trainers as they deliver ECC to the next generation of Suzuki teachers throughout the Suzuki Association of the Americas.
