I have been teaching violin and viola since 1985. In 1991 I began using the Suzuki Method, taking Suzuki teacher training in book 1 with Linda Stieg.
In 1995, I established the Corryville Suzuki Project with my wife, Elizabeth Council-Phelan, also a violin and viola teacher.
I am an expert in teaching beginner level ( ages 4 and above) through college level students. My teaching philosophy is aligned with Dr. Suzuki’s: every child can develop superior ability and excellent personal character through a nurturing environment, consistent effort, and encouragement by the teacher.
My goal is to help each of my students to discover his/her unique approach to music making, and to develop the student’s individual sound. I focus on excellent playing posture in my students as it serves the higher goal of beautiful music making, and I help my students develop their inner musical ear, which leads them to an even greater love of music.
Several of my students are active as performers, teachers, composers and arrangers.
