Mrs. Stephanie H. Miller
Mrs. Miller’s Piano Teaching Credentials
Stephanie Miller is a graduate of Bennington College in Vermont, where she received a B.A. in Music. She has a M.S. in Elementary Education from Southern Connecticut State University. She taught first and third grade at private schools (including Independent Day School in Middlefield, CT) for about fifteen years, which adds to her experience about how children learn. Teaching beginning reading and math relates directly to teaching beginning piano. Mrs. Miller began teaching traditional piano lessons for about twenty years and Suzuki Piano concurrently for more than fifteen years – pretty close to its beginning years in the US.
Mrs. Miller has certification to teach Suzuki Piano—Foundation Unit through Volume 4. She trained with first generation Teacher Trainers: Valery Lloyd-Watts, Carole Bigler, Constance Starr, Doris Koppelman, Bob Fraley, Yasuko Joichi, and last but not least, Haruko Kataoka, who was the original head of Dr. Suzuki’s Piano Department at the Talent Education Institute in Matsumoto, Japan. Mme. Kataoka was quite controversial.
Besides teaching at her studio in Portland, CT, Mrs. Miller has taught Suzuki Piano, private lessons and group classes at Hartford Conservatory in Hartford, CT and taught lessons at the Community Music School in Centerbrook, CT during the late 80’s and 90’s, resuming at Hartford Conservatory until it closed in 2010. Now she only teaches at her studio.
