Rachel Handlin received her B.M. and M.M. in violin performance at NIU where she studied with Pierre Menard and other members of the Vermeer quartet. Currently Rachel is the String Program director and private violin/viola instructor at the Music Academy in Rockford, IL. Rachel has Suzuki training through Book 7 and received an SAA scholarship in 2009 to do the books 1-4 Practicum with Teri Einfeldt at the Chicago Suzuki Institute. In 1996 Rachel received the Outstanding Studio Teacher award from Illinois ASTA. In addition to teaching, Rachel is assistant concertmaster of Rockford Symphony, concertmaster of Mendelssohn Chamber orchestra, and principal second of the Woodstock Mozart Festival. Rachel has been a featured soloist at the Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center, most recently playing Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Lark Ascending, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Sibelius’ Humoresques, Bach’s double concerto for oboe and violin and Brandenburg 5. Rachel’s husband, Mike, is a cellist and her daughter, Aria, is a Suzuki violinist.
