Toronto native Rachel Gauntlett is a cellist with a celebrated background in music performance, teaching, and arts administration. Her performances have been broadcast on CBC radio and taken her to Lincoln Center in New York City.

As an orchestral musician, Rachel has held Principal Cello positions with Sneak Peak Orchestra (Toronto) and l’Orchestre de la Francophonie (Montréal) among others. Rachel performed as a full time member of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra for three consecutive seasons, from 2011 to 2014.

Rachel is a dedicated educator, having completed her Suzuki teacher training at the Chicago Suzuki Institute and Institut Suzuki Montréal. She is experienced in teaching private and group lessons in Suzuki and Sistema-based programs, and is passionate about teaching students of all ages. Rachel has held faculty positions with the Newfoundland Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Suzuki Talent Education Program of Newfoundland, and Sistema Toronto. She currently maintains an active private studio and teaches at the Kingsway Conservatory of Music in Toronto.

Rachel is a registered teacher with the Suzuki Association of the Americas and the Suzuki Association of Ontario. More recently, she served as a Guest Clinician at the Suzuki Association of Ontario’s Annual Conference. Upcoming plans include teaching at the Atlantic Canada Suzuki Institute as a Visiting Guest Faculty Member, as well as further Suzuki training at the Chicago Suzuki Institute, both in summer of 2016.

Rachel began studying cello with Julia Bowkun in Toronto. She continued her studies with Tom Wiebe (Western University), Paul Widner (the Glenn Gould School), and Vernon Regehr (Memorial University). Rachel holds an undergraduate degree in music from Western University, a Master’s degree in Music Performance from Memorial University, and a post graduate diploma in Arts Administration and Cultural Management from Humber College. Aside from performing and teaching, Rachel holds a full time position as Operations Manager with Esprit Orchestra, Canada’s only full-sized orchestra devoted exclusively to commissioning and performing contemporary classical music.
