Päivi Kukkamäki is the founder of the Suzuki Voice Program, which she started 1986 in Finland with the support of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki and Waltraud Suzuki. She has studied Suzuki-method in Japan Matsumoto Talent Education Institute 1986 and again 1993. Kukkamaki has a Doctor of Music Degree from Sibelius University 2003. She is a chairperson of the International and the European Suzuki Voice Committee and a registered Suzuki Voice Teacher Trainer of ESA and SAA. She has graduated from Sibelius University with the highest degree in singing 1988. Her teachers have been professor, opera singer Jorma Hynninen and opera singer Raili Kostia. She has had a voice master course for example with Wagnerian Soprano Birgit Nilsson.

Dr. Kukkamäki has given lectures workshops and teacher training in 16 countries (Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin-America and USA) and participated in 48 international Suzuki Conferences, conventions and /or workshops. Her first SAA conference was in 1990. She has trained Suzuki Voice Teachers from 22 countries and made 29 concert trips with Suzuki Voice students to 19 countries for example to Japan 1989, 1999 and 2013.

Her doctoral work at university was Growing through Singing. The Suzuki Voice Program enables a student to start listening to songs during pregnancy and continue singing until adulthood. The original voice students have followed in the Program for 26-30 years. Since the age of 3, Kukkamäki sang for 9 years in Finnish Television children’s programs. She is the mother of 1 girl and 3 boys.

Dr Kukkamäki received the Vantaa award 2003 for her work promoting children’s culture and Art scholarship 1993 and 2007. Her group received the Finnish Cultural Foundation scholarship in 2005, 2007 and 2012. In 2013 she was awarded an honorary medal of a Knight of the Order of The White Rose of Finland. She has directed 10 opera or musical productions for children for example “Hansel und Gretel” opera in German, “Sound of Music” in English, “El Gato con Botas” in Spanish, the new Finnish children’s opera “Roope” and new musical “Snow White and Rose-Red”.
