Mayu Tsuda Sommovigo was born in Yokohama, Japan. She started her violin study at the age of three with Suzuki Certified Teacher, Yukako Okumura. Her fun memory of being a Suzuki student was when Dr. Suzuki came for play in. He always made children giggly with excitement. When she teaches young children, the memory of him inspires her.

She graduated from New England Conservatory of Music in Violin Performance, BM (96) and MM (98). For BM, she made the National Dean’s List. While she was at the New England Conservatory, she studied with Eric Rosenblith, Michele Auclair for violin studies, and Patricia Zander and Lucy Chapman for her chamber music studies. While she was in school, she was invited as a soloist with Botosani Philharmonic, Botosani, Romania. For her chamber music studies, Mayu was invited to the Yellow Barn Music Festival, Putney VT, and the Nova Scotia Music Festival, where the composer-in-residence was Phillip Glass.

Mayu has was a member of the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra since 1999- 2015, and she has been an active freelancer. She has played with the Atlanta Symphony, the Atlanta Opera, the Alabama Symphony and other regional orchestras in GA and SC. She has performed with Diana Ross, Diana Krall, Indigo Girls, Earth, Wind and Fire to name a few. Her premiere of Bill Rae’s piece was aired on WABE.

She also enjoys teaching violin from the beginners to the advanced. It is her pleasure to help 4 year old from playing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star to help same student play Mendelssohn Concerto in her high school year. Many of her students were accepted in the Allstate Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra and Strings, the Emory Youth Orchestra and Emory Junior Chamber Orchestra. Her students describe her as ” fun” but her lessons are “challenging.”
