Mary Wilkening graduated with a music major from the University of Illinois, and later studied cello with Gabor Rejto at USC. She received a MA in Education from Catholic University in Washington DC through the Urban Teacher Corps program. She studied the Suzuki Method of teaching cello with Phyllis Glass in LA, with Yvonne Tait in Tucson, and Barbara Wampner and Tanya Carey at Stevens Point, Wisconsin. She has been president of the Arizona Suzuki Association and still serves on its board of directors. She is currently president of the West Valley Youth Orchestra. She played in the West Valley Symphony for 33 years and was principal cello for 20 years. She taught kindergarten and first grade in Avondale School district for 12 years and she also was a center director for Music Together for 12 years. She currently teaches cello in her home studio in Litchfield Park, AZ.
