Kent Shin began playing violin in the Detroit Public schools in elementary school. He played throughout high school, becoming a New Jersey All- State Orchestra member.  Kent came back to playing violin after a career in the United States Air Force as a navigator flying the MC-130E, MC-130H, F-16D and C-12.  As his children began music lessons, he began playing again with his children and in community orchestras. These orchestras were in Henderson NV, Washington DC, and here in Dayton. Kent was a member of the Miami Valley Symphony Orchestra since 2008. He has recently performed with the Ohio Valley Symphony in Gallipolis in 2021 and 2022.  He also has played in the Yellow Springs Chamber Orchestra and currently plays in the Wright State University Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra. Kent graduated summa cum laude from Wright State majoring in violin performance in 2022.  Kent is pursuing a performance certificate as a master’s violin student and studies viola as well.  Kent’s Suzuki teacher certification was taught by Linda and Roger Steig, in Columbus, who studied in Japan with Dr. Suzuki for 2 years. His teachers have included Jane Hannauer, Goertz Rustig (Westminster Choir College), Geoffrey Michaels (Princeton University), Jennifer Eriksson (Las Vegas Philharmonic), and Dr. In-Hong Cha on violin and Dr. Kevin Nordstrom on viola (Wright State). He is a member of the American String Teachers Association and Suzuki Association of the Americas.
