Mrs. Kathryn Lapp, a certified Suzuki teacher, is founder and director of the Northeast Music Academy (Calgary), where she prepares violin and singing students for Royal Conservatory of Music (Canada) exams, from beginning to advanced levels, in addition to using the Suzuki repertoire with students.

Kathryn has taught violin—both Suzuki and Royal Conservatory methods—since 1971. She taught as a violin teacher with the MRU Conservatory Branch Association from 1994 – 2016, and now manages her own teaching business called the Northeast Music Academy (Calgary).

Kathryn played violin full-time in the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra from 1982—2001, and then played part-time with the CPO, until she retired from playing professionally in 2015.

Kathryn always wanted to learn to sing well, so after many years of instruction from Blaine Chapmen, she earned her ARCT diploma in Singing Performance in 2005 from the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto, Canada). She now teaches classical singing, as well as violin.

Kathryn (Baker) Lapp grew up in the musical Baker family with twelve children, where every night she went to sleep listening to someone practice! She studied violin with Sigmund Effron, Concertmaster of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, in Cincinnati, Ohio, from 1959 to 1975. She graduated from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, Ohio as a violin major, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree—magna cum laude with honors—in 1975. One of her favorite memories from CCM was playing the complete Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the CCM Concert Orchestra (1975) to a standing ovation—quite a thrill!

Kathryn moved to Canada in September 1975 when she won the Principal Second Violin position with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra (Ontario). She met and married her husband Arthur there, when he was the tubist and librarian with the Thunder Bay Symphony. Married to Arthur since 1976, they are the parents of six grown children, and eleven delightful grandchildren.

Kathryn enjoys a wide range of studies in health, nutrition, inner healing, and biblical prophecy. Because of her love for the Bible, she earned a course-based Masters Degree in Theology in 2004 “by accident”—because she keep taking so many well-loved courses! And because of her love for nutrition and health, she developed a marketing organization for Youngevity health products of over 200 distributors and customers, reaching the level of Senior Executive Marketing Director in 2013.

Kathryn looks forward to many more years of teaching, hoping to be a positive influence in the lives of many children and families.
