Kathleen Schoen has been teaching both flute and recorder since receiving her B.Mus degree from UBC in 1984. After beginning her Suzuki method training in 1997, she founded the Edmonton Suzuki Flute and Recorder Society in 2007 to meet the increased demand for Suzuki method instruction on those instruments, and became a Teacher Trainer for recorder in 2013. She is active in the Suzuki community both locally and internationally, as an Institute Director, Conference Co-ordinator, teacher, teacher trainer, and program administrator, and is the first Canadian flute teacher to receive the Certificate of Achievement from the SAA. Her teaching engagements have taken her as far north as Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, and as far south as Lima, Peru. She is also a sessional instructor in flute and recorder at the University of Alberta, Augustana campus. A performer on flute, baroque flute, and recorder, she works both as a soloist and with her chamber music group, the Schoen Duo. She has extensive early music training with period performance specialists, yet her musical interests are varied, and she performs modern pieces for flute and electronics as well as historical period pieces. A Suzuki parent as well as a teacher, her daughter started in the Suzuki program at the age of 2 and is now also a trained Suzuki teacher.
