Karen Lauffer has been teaching for fifteen years, and is the director of a Silver Strings Academy in Westminster. She has a Bachelor’s in Music Education and Master’s Degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder in Violin Performance and Pedagogy. She did her Suzuki training with the nationally acclaimed pedagogue, William Starr. She played professionally with the York Symphony Orchestra for two years as a violist, and with the Shippensburg Festival Orchestra as a violinist. With these orchestras, she had the pleasure of sharing the stage with great artists such as Joshua Bell, Christopher Riley, and Nadia Solerno Sonnenburg. She has also done recordings on violin, viola, and ‘cello in a number of different genres. Today, she maintains a large studio and plays in a Celtic band.

I teach out of my own private studio space in Westminster/Arvada: Silver Strings Academy. I teach students as young as 3, and teach through college-prep level. I also teach adult beginners. I believe in music’s power to transform a child’s life. Playing an instrument can help give a child a sense of identity, and help build their self-esteem. Learning to play an instrument is not only a fun enriching experience- it teaches children to analyze themselves, helps them to think on many different levels simultaneously, improves memory and listening skills, teaches discipline, and can be a wonderful activity that brings the family closer together. Being part of a collective studio has many benefits! Students can have access to more than one teacher, are offered group lessons, recitals, and group concerts.

After studying for a few years, many of my students go on to play in the Front Range Youth Symphony, Colorado Youth Symphony, Greater Boulder Youth Orchestra, and Jefferson’s all-county Orchestra. These are all competitive orchestras that help children with music reading and ensemble playing. Others compete in Celtic Fiddle competitions, and often place highly. My students also perform in two or three solo recitals each year. Group classes, and chamber music for older students are offered over the summer.
