Julianne Carney-Chung

Julianne Carney-Chung is a violin teacher and freelance violinist based in Brooklyn, NY. She was the Director of the Suzuki Division at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music from 2008-2023.

She completed Unit 1—8 of Suzuki training at the School for Strings with Allen Lieb and Louise Behrend, and ECC and Unit 1 at the Chicago Suzuki Institute with Ed Kreitman and Nancy Jackson.

Julianne received the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship in 2001-02, and earned her Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance, summa cum laude, at Lawrence University, in Appleton, WI.

Ms. Carney-Chung regularly performs with Adam Rudolph’s Go: Organic Orchestra, and has performed with Anthony Braxton’s Tri-Centric Orchestra, the Eco Music Big Band. She performed with Jay Z at Radio City Music Hall and at Royal Albert Hall, recorded with Sufjan Stevens for his album Illinois, and appeared with Beyonce, Jenny Scheinman, Bill Frisell, Adam Matta (beatbox), My Brightest Diamond (formerly AwRY), and Duane Pitre.

As an improviser, Julianne finds intersections between classical, jazz, electro-acoustic experimental, hip hop, gypsy, oldtime fiddle, and Arabic sounds. Julianne was a Music OMI Resident Fellow in 2008.
