Mr. Austin offers private and group classes in NYC and Basking Ridge, NJ. He is a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique and his writings have been featured by the American Center for the Alexander Technique. He has taught workshops at Teachers College, Columbia and McGill Universities. Mr. Austin was the studio teaching assistant while pursuing a viola performance degree at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where he also attended high school. He has taught on faculty at the Louisiana State University Music Academy and the Winter Harbor Chamber Music Festival.

Mr. Austin specializes in teaching beginners to play like naturals, developing natural movement patterns, balance, and breathing; making the leaning process fast, fun and easy. For more advanced students who have musculoskeletal pain and technique issues his approach can return even older students to their full childhood potential by unlearning habit patterns restricting progress.

Mr. Austin is an accomplished violist and violinist and an active performer in the greater NYC area. He was a member of the Manhattan Symphony, Bergen Symphony, Asheville and Winston-Salem Symphonies, as well as countless chamber groups. In addition to his classical roots he has recorded and performed live with folk, contemporary jazz, and rap groups such as Deltron 3030 and Tarbaby.

John is currently on faculty as violin, viola, and Alexander instructor at the New Jersey Academy of Music in Bernardsville, NJ. Lessons available in Brooklyn, NY, house calls to other burros possible.
