Born in Carmel, California, Joan King started studying violin at age 9. She attended San Jose State and the National Conservatory in Mexico, and studied with a number of teachers, including Elizabeth Kincade, Naoum Blinder, Albert Gillis, Vladimir Wulfmann, Robert Gerle, Henryk Szerying, Sydney Humphreys, and Paul Kling.

A professional orchestral musician since 1968, she has played in several orchestras, including the Fine Arts Orchestra of Mexico City, the Mexico State Symphony, National Symphony of Mexico, National Symphony (Washington, DC), Xalapa Symphony, and Colorado Music Festival Orchestra, among others.

Joan formed part of the Victoria Symphony, as well as teaching at the Victoria Conservatory of Music until 2006, when she moved to the Vancouver, BC area, where she teaches a select number of students, ranging from the youngest beginners through RCM grade 10, and plays with the West Coast and New Westminster Symphonies.
