In 2004, Jana was introduced to the Suzuki Method by a friend of hers and got hooked!  She began teaching at the Hyde Park Suzuki Institute in Chicago, IL and soon became the Assistant Director of Early Childhood Music.  In addition to her private studio, Jana taught Kindermusik and an early childhood music class for preschool instrumental students called “Shake, Rattle ‘n Roll.”  At the request of her local library, Jana led (and thoroughly enjoyed!) a monthly music and movement preschool story time.  Jana was also principal flute with the Lake Shore Symphony Orchestra of Chicago and was a member of a woodwind quintet that performed at local schools.

Jana and her husband relocated to Elizabethtown, PA in 2007 where she began teaching through the Elizabethtown College Preparatory Division and in her home studio.  She is a board member and principal flutist with the Allegro Chamber Orchestra and performs with several other local ensembles. She also enjoys performing with the Susquehanna Wind Quintet and playing in a flute/guitar duo with her husband.

Jana Oberholtzer MacKay grew up in Lititz, PA where she studied flute with the late Edie Overly and piano with Jan Stauffer and her mother, Carol Oberholtzer.   Music always played an important role in Jana’s life.  From leading worship at her church to performing with various ensembles and teaching students, music kept Jana busy throughout high school.  One of her most prestigious accomplishments was an invitation by audition to perform with the National High School Honors Orchestra in Phoenix, Arizona.  After high school, Jana studied flute at Indiana University (Bloomington, IN) with Thomas Robertello, with Susan Levitin (Chicago, IL) and with Paula Nelson (Elizabethtown College).  She worked in a language development lab at the University of Chicago and received her Masters degree in child development and administration from the Erikson Institute of Chicago.  She interned in school administration at the Cambridge School of Chicago.

Jana has performed in masterclasses under Jeanne Baxtresser, Emily Skala, Takeaki Miyamae, and Thomas Robertello.  She received Suzuki flute training under Deborah Kemper and David Gerry and Suzuki piano training under Diana Galindo.  She is currently a member of the Suzuki Association of the Americas.

When she’s not teaching or performing, Jana enjoys reading, gardening, indulging her creative side, and spending time with her husband and young children.
