A native of Chisholm, MN, Byron Klimek is the principal cellist of the Mesabi Symphony Orchestra and substitute cellist for the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra, LOON Opera Orchestra, Lake Superior Chamber Orchestra, and the Bemidji Symphony. He earned his MM degree in cello performance at the University of Minnesota-Duluth under the instruction of Dr. Betsy Husby. Highly active in the Twin Ports community, Mr. Klimek can also be heard performing as the solo cellist for the productions at the Duluth Playhouse, the UMD Theater Department, and the Underground Theater. Mr. Klimek has appeared as a soloist with the Mesabi Chamber Orchestra, the University of Wisconsin-Superior Chamber Orchestra, and the University of Wisconsin-Superior Symphonic Band. In 2018, he performed David Maslanka’s Remember Me as the concerto soloist with the UW-Superior Chamber Wind Ensemble. He has performed in masterclasses for the Artaria Quartet, the Lyrica Quartet, Amit Peled, and Illya Kahler. He is a sought-after collaborative musician in the Twin Ports community, performing chamber music with various local musicians in recitals, and has been involved in premiering and commissioning new works for mixed ensemble. In addition to his performing, Mr. Klimek maintains an active private studio, and serves as cello and beginning violin/viola faculty for the University of Wisconsin-Superior’s Conservatory program and has completed Suzuki Teacher Training at the Chicago Suzuki Instritue. Mr. Klimek graduated summa cum laude from the University of Wisconsin-Superior with his BM in cello performance. His primary instructors include Dr. Betsy Husby, Lucia Magney, Christina Roytz, and Glenn Rupp.
