At age six, Ben Lougheed’s mother forced him to begin taking music lessons and gave him the choice of studying piano, violin, or guitar. With dreams of being a rock star in his future, Ben choose the guitar. Twelve years later, as a senior in High School, Ben realized that he wanted to be a performer when he played in a collaboration between the University of Michigan musical society and a local teen center. The performance took place at one of the largest halls on Michigan’s campus and was filled beyond capacity, upwards of 1,500 people. Playing in between a traditional Indian dancer and a start-up indie band, Ben played Recuerdos del Alhambra to raucous applause. It is an experience he will never forget.
Ben has been praised by the Baltimore Sun for his marvelous playing and gorgeous sounding accompaniment. He has enjoyed success in his multi-faceted career all over the east coast.
Not confined to the classical realm, Ben has performed in an Off Broadway show in Baltimore and New York called Simply Complicated: The Elegant Escapades of a Danish Israeli Tank Commander. He also performs regularly for the Peabody community outreach program “Creative Access.” In addition to his solo work, Ben is also a founding member of Gentlemen’s Quarterly Guitar Quartet (GQGQ). Not even a year old, GQGQ has already “dazzled the audience through their stylish and passionate performances” and been favorably compared to the world-famous LAGQ.
Ben studied for 12 years with groundbreaking Suzuki teacher Mary Lou Roberts. As a Suzuki student he participated in group class lessons with younger children, and this is what sparked his interest in teaching, which has led to him becoming a certified Suzuki teacher with hopes of soon starting his own studio.
Ben has been awarded various scholarships including the Charlie Byrd Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Guitar to attend the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins, where he is currently studying with world-renowned teacher and current department chair, Julian Gray. He has participated in master classes with some of the most accomplished guitarists in the world, including Ana Vidovic, Denis Azabagic, and Jason Vieaux.
