Suzuki Community Strings is a music studio founded in the teachings of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki.

Our vision is peace and understanding through music.

Our mission is to impart knowledge, encouragement, and enthusiasm as we guide students of all ages to develop their inner-musician via the Suzuki Way.

Founder and Director of Suzuki Community Strings, Anne Marie Haber, has the perspective and experience of being an adult-learner of violin, in addition to being the parent of two Suzuki kids. In 2022, Anne Marie completed a Rowan University course: Foundations of DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), to gain knowledge on further expanding welcoming and inclusion at Suzuki Community Strings.

With a combination of individual lessons and group playing, students are instructed in Suzuki repertoire, traditional music, and improvisation. These skills can then be shared (during non-Covid times) in the broader community through recital and performance opportunities at special events, including recitals sponsored by Suzuki Association of the Capital District, Victorian Stroll (winter festival), Troy Farmers Market, Community Meal at the YWCA, and local pre-K programs.

Participants are encouraged from the beginning to enjoy music-making together. Family members often participate in group classes and this is enthusiastically welcomed. Pianists, guitarists, ukulele aficionados, flutists, and percussionists have all joined in group classes.

During Covid times, our Suzuki players (both youth and adult) have remained connected and supportive to one another through our 6-8 ensemble classes per week via distance-music platforms.  In 2021, Suzuki Community Strings was awarded two technology grants—one from Associated Chamber Music Players (ACMP) and one from SHAR Music— to upgrade technology for remote music participation.  Platforms include JamKazam, Zoom, CleanFeed, and Sonobus.

Suzuki Community Strings offers a limited number of scholarship opportunities to students in financial need in the Troy, New York area.  Suzuki Community Strings welcomes LGBTIQ+, Black, Indigenous, People of Color, and families of all configurations.
