A native of Campos do Jordão, Brazil, Ana Abrantes has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician across the United States and Brazil. As an avid orchestra player, she was a member of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and Meridian Symphony Orchestra, performing with renowned artists such as Renee Fleming, Manuel Barrueco, and Itzhak Perlman. At the University of Georgia, Dr. Abrantes has served as the principal cellist of the ARCO Chamber Orchestra, the University of Georgia’s Symphony Orchestra, and Athens Symphony Orchestra. She was a member of the Hodgson String Quartet.

Dr. Abrantes has her Suzuki teaching certification and uses this as the basis for her teaching method. She was the director of HeifetzPEG, a program for exceptionally gifted children at the Heifetz International Music Institute and she is currently the Director of Education for the Sphinx Organization. Ana is also passionate about performing a variety of musical styles. She has performed with the Brazilian pop band Roupa Nova, and is passionate about pursuing diverse musical opportunities.

Dr. Abrantes holds a Bachelor of Music degree in cello performance from the University of Southern Mississippi, a Master of Music degree in cello performance from the University of Georgia, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in cello performance with a minor in music theory from the University of Georgia. Abrantes’ principal teachers include Alexander Russakovsky and David Starkweather.
