Not just two pianos placed side by side,

But the experience of two or more teachers learning together, side by side.

In the Suzuki method we are encouraged to teach with two pianos placed side by side so that one player can learn from the other, to learn to listen to each other and to play together; the whole music experience changes when teaching with two pianos.

At the Suzuki Festival “Vive la Música” held in September 2013, at the beginning of the school year, we experienced something else: Suzuki teachers also learn a lot from each other, starting with the importance of knowing that there are other teachers at our side whose experiences are very much like our own. They may have started on this path some time before we did, but they´re walking the same path. This gives us a feeling of support—to feel we are not on alone on the path of Suzuki piano teaching.

In Mexico we have created a Suzuki Piano Community, inspired by Dr.Suzuki’s philosophy of sharing and not competing, but rather focusing on the students’ well-being. We have realized that incredible changes happen for teachers when they have the opportunity to share ideas, even when the sharing happens outside the structure of unit study. We shared experiences that we have lived each day as Suzuki piano teachers with our students and their parents, for all students and families are similar all over the country.

Changes are often profound when in training courses teachers begin to perceive the accomplishments being achieved by each course participant. Teachers may confirm that they are on the right path or maybe realize that there is still a lot to achieve, but the goals feel totally within reach because a colleague is accomplishing it.

This translates into motivation that is so necessary for each teacher. It encourages us to continue making changes, leads us to have the strength and firmness to tell our students’ parents: follow me; this is the way–trust me.

We are convinced that the contact between teachers generates changes in each teacher’s life. These changes then will impact many people within each Suzuki school and studio and beyond.

This image also gives parents the peace of mind of knowing that, whichever teacher they choose around the country, they will be part of the Suzuki piano group, and this will assure their children will have an appropriate Suzuki experience. And whenever they travel around the country to attend different Suzuki festivals, they will be able to be a part of the same Suzuki environment that they experience with their home teacher.

We have also realized the importance of taking piano courses more than once. Once is not enough; we can absorb only so much from each course and each course brings us the experience of observing new students, which brings a new opportunity to revise and learn from each one. Sometimes we learn about the importance of having two pianos or of having the right piano benches and foot stools; we learn that achieving these conditions definitely makes a difference in the students’ playing. It just clicks! And we find the motivation we were looking for to make the changes.

We encourage teachers to seek continuing training, to have their students attend Suzuki festivals and workshops, to engage in the Suzuki experience as much as possible. The results show that all these matters and definitely enhance the teaching experience.

Sharing makes things a lot easier and more enjoyable; being part of a group gives the teacher new ideas and motivates him or her to continue walking on the Suzuki teaching path … walking together, side by side.

LADO a LADO
