UPDATE:
The application deadline for Communicating Honor for Diversity has been extended to Friday, September 24.

This 4-part seminar introduces participants to five strategies that increase capacity to engage students, families, and colleagues from diverse backgrounds. Recent participants have used these tools to introduce their students to a more diverse body of composers, provide lessons for students from many financial backgrounds, and use assertiveness and respect to advance conversations that lead to action to increase access to the Suzuki Method for all families and educators. Applications are available below in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Beyond tolerance, honor is showing great respect for yourself, other people, and the values and rules you live by. The “Communicating Honor for Diversity” program includes four instructional sessions (12 hours) of training and practice with strategies for teacher-family music education collaborations that celebrate participation by all races, ethnicities, identities, religions, and cultures. Participants will engage five communication strategies, become more familiar with the contributions of the diverse people who reside in the Americas, and develop action plans to increase meaningful diversity in their own work. Between sessions, there will be practice elements to reinforce patterns of thought and action and one small-group project. Participants will be invited to three refresher/reflection seminars during the year following the training. Participants will also commit to serving as Inclusion Coaches to ensure that growing numbers of SAA educators and collaborators are able to communicate honor for diversity and work effectively and respectfully with families and colleagues of all backgrounds.

This series is offered free of charge as a partnership between SAA and The Virtues Collective and is open to all SAA members in support of the organization’s mission to develop beautiful hearts through beautiful tone, and to encourage intentional respect and deep love for each teacher, student, and parent engaged in this life-long process of becoming. Applications will be accepted through September 24. If you need additional information, please contact Nwandi Lawson: [javascript protected email address].
