XXIX PERU SUZUKI FESTIVAL
For the third time I had the opportunity to attend a Suzuki Festival in Peru last January. It was also my third time to take Piano Unit Three. On this occasion I had the honor and the privilege to have three of my students and their families to fly in from Mexico to receive masterclasses with my mentor, Caroline Fraser.
This combination together with a fantastic group of trainees from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, México, Paraguay and Peru (Cusco, Huancavelica, Lima y Piura), made this an exceptional event.
My students, Maria, Ana and Ximena, took part in masterclasses where there was the Suzuki triangle was expanded: in addition to the student, parent and teacher triad, they were in contact with of another generation of their music family tree. They worked with their home teacher’s teacher, in other words their “music grandmother,” who has many years of teaching experience.
This dynamic gave me different insights into the lessons. Watching the corrections and the musical work directly on my students’ hands made me identify and focus my attention on the teaching points I still needed to work on. I also discovered to what extent my students were able to learn and be taken to higher levels of performance. The students learned, their home teacher learned and the students’ parents witnessed all of it and became aware of how much further their children can progress in their musical studies.
On the following mornings I had the opportunity to review and practice with my students the specific points given in the lessons and prepare them for their next session with Caroline. This allowed immediate learning; the new things learned were internalized, both by my students and me.
As a result, after three days of master classes with Caroline and review classes with me, the progress and motivation were evident. We all came back home with a great bunch of experiences which brought us to a higher level of performance which we would not have otherwise reached in such a short time.
It was helpful to be immersed in a musical environment for a whole week, where everyone became a student; everyone was able to enjoy and benefit from teacher trainers who shared a deeper level of knowledge and to be part of a musical bubble that nourished our spirits.
Being able to learn through my students has been a greatly enriching experience. Having the opportunity to go beyond the Suzuki triangle allows us to grow and to continue practicing starting from a higher level of skill and understanding.

XXIX FESTIVAL SUZUKI PERU
MÁS ALLÁ DEL TRIÁNGULO
Esta es la tercera vez que tengo la oportunidad de asistir al Festival Suzuki en Perú, también tomé por tercera vez el curso de Piano 3 y en esta ocasión tuve el honor y el privilegio de que tres de mis alumnas viajaran desde México junto con sus familias para recibir clases maestras de piano con mi mentora Caroline Fraser.
Esta combinación, aunada a un fantástico grupo de profesores de varios países de Latinoamérica: Argentina, Brasil, Chile, México (distrito Federal y Tampico), Paraguay y Perú (Cusco, Huancavelica, Lima y Piura), hizo que esta experiencia fuera excepcional.
María, Ana y Ximena, recibieron clases maestras en donde algo más que el triángulo Suzuki estuvo presente; además de la triada de alumno, padres y profesora, estuvieron en contacto con un nivel más alto de su árbol musicológico, con la maestra de su profesora de casa, es decir su abuela musical, quien tiene una mayor experiencia en su propio camino de la enseñanza.
Esta experiencia le dio otra dimensión a las clases, ya que el observar directamente el trabajo en las manos de mis alumnas aclaró de inmediato los puntos de enseñanza que yo no tenía resueltos en mí y además, descubrí de lo que mis alumnas son capaces de lograr al ser llevadas a otro nivel interpretativo. De esta manera, aprendieron las alumnas y aprendió su maestra y los padres fueron testigos de todo esto.
En el transcurso de esos días tuve la oportunidad de revisar con cada una de mis alumnas los puntos a trabajar para la siguiente clase con Caroline, lo cual hizo que el aprendizaje fuera inmediato y se internalizaran los nuevos conocimientos tanto para mis alumnas como para mí. Esto dio como resultado que el avance y la motivación en todas fuera evidente. Regresamos a casa con un cúmulo de experiencias que nos colocan en un siguiente nivel al cual no hubiéramos llegado en tan poco tiempo sin estas vivencias.
Otra situación favorable fue el haber estado inmersos en este ambiente musical durante una semana, en donde todos—alumnos y profesores, quienes a su vez se convierten en alumnos- disfrutaron y se enriquecieron del ejemplo de los maestros entrenadores que nos brindaron experiencias de muy alto nivel, alimentando nuestras mentes y nuestros espíritus.
El poder aprender a través mis alumnas ha sido una experiencia profundamente enriquecedora que me ha llevado más allá del triángulo Suzuki, permitiéndonos a todos crecer y continuar el estudio desde el siguiente escalón.
