{"id":280350,"name":"Tyson Citerman","url":"","description":"Ty Citerman is a Brooklyn, NY-based guitarist, composer and music educator who works across the spectrum of jazz, rock and contemporary classical. Born in St. Louis, MO, he moved to New York City in 1992 to attend Columbia University, where he got his B.A. in psychology, became a DJ at WKCR-FM, and began performing professionally in the local club scene. After spending years touring and performing with various projects, he received his M.M. in music composition from Brooklyn College in 2016. Ty has been teaching guitar, music composition and music theory for more than 25 years.\nTy is an active bandleader, freelancer and improviser in the contemporary NYC music scene. His project Bop Kabbalah explores the juxtaposition of original composition, improvisation and Jewish musical traditions. Its trio incarnation, Bop Kabbalah+Voices (with Sara Serpa and Judith Berkson) released two recordings of original Yiddish labor songs on Infrequent Seams, which Eyal Hareuveni (in &#8220;Salt Peanuts&#8221;) called \u201cinspiring and moving\u2026beautifully arranged and delivered.\u201d Bop Kabbalah\u2019s quartet premiered on John Zorn&#8217;s Tzadik Records in 2014, and &#8220;JazzTimes&#8221; called the album \u201c\u2026one of the year\u2019s most arresting recordings\u2026\u201d Ty is a founding member of the irreverent quartet Gutbucket, which has released six recordings and toured across the US and Europe. &#8220;Guitar Player&#8221; called Ty&#8217;s music &#8220;kinetic punk jazz opuses&#8221; that \u201creveal an explosive concoction containing lethal doses of Ornette Coleman, King Crimson, John Zorn, Black Sabbath, Stravinsky, and Fugazi.&#8221; \nTy has performed at Carnegie Hall, London Jazz Festival, Paris Jazz Festival, Jazz Saalfelden and more. He has been awarded grants from the Brooklyn Arts Council in 2018 and 2023 to support his performance and composition work.
