Additional Schedule Information

Unit 1 teacher training requires 8 days of classroom instruction and 16 hours of observation. The course will begin the morning of May 30 and conclude June 6 afternoon at 5:00. Travel arrangements will need to allow for 100% participation in the 28 hours of classroom instruction.

Event Description

Every Child Can foundation course must be taken prior to the institute. Online course information is posted on the SAA website at www.suzukiassociation.org. To facilitate planning and faculty availability, the course registration deadline is March 1, 2023.
Unit 1 courses may be taken by participants on both violin and viola.

The SAA required instrumental audition must be submitted and approved at least 8 weeks prior to the course. Information about the audition process and requirements are posted on the SAA website. Submitting your audition on time will allow FSI directors to verify your eligibility to take the Unit 1 course.

All participants must be active members of the SAA prior to starting the teacher training course.

Prerequisite course:

Every Child Can!, or Filosofía

Audition: Violin Basic, or Violin Intermediate, or Violin Comprehensive, or Viola Basic, or Viola Intermediate, or Viola Comprehensive.

Trainer Information

Ann Montzka Smelser

Ann Montzka-Smelser is a Suzuki Student, Teacher, Parent and Suzuki Teacher Trainer. In between receiving her Bachelors of Music Education and Masters in Performance and Pedagogy at Northern Illinois University, Ann studied with Dr. Shinichi Suzuki at the Talent Education Institute in Matsumoto, Japan.
Ann has performed in many orchestras and ensembles and is currently principal violist with Camerata Chicago and concertmaster of the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Ann is on the music faculty at Northern Illinois University and Northwestern University teaching Suzuki Pedagogy, Director of the NIU CSA Suzuki Strings Program and teacher at the Music Institute of Chicago. Ann maintains a studio of 40 violin and viola students and enjoys working with Suzuki families at Festivals in Lima, Peru, Singapore, Mexico, Costa Rica and though out the US. Ann lives in DeKalb, IL with her husband Linc. Their Suzuki-raised children, Benjamin and Genevieve are currently studying music in college.
