Event Description

Building on all the skills learned in Suzuki Books 1-3, this course will dive into the new technical and musical challenges of Suzuki Book 4 with Ruth Meints. Learn how to develop well-balanced intermediate students who have a strong technical foundation and sense of musicianship required for playing future major concertos. While receiving training to teach Suzuki Book 4, participants will have the opportunity to observe Suzuki Institute classes and masterclasses, as well as classes and masterclasses taught by Suzuki trained instructors at The Omaha Conservatory of Music’s SoundWaves, a pre-college music intensive. This course is 15 hours and requires 8 hours of observation. Capacity is limited to 15 participants.

Pre-requisites: Basic Audition and Violin Book 3

Prerequisite course:

Viola Unit 3, or Violin Unit 3

Audition: Violin Basic, or Violin Intermediate, or Violin Comprehensive, or Viola Intermediate, or Viola Comprehensive.

Trainer Information

Ruth Meints

Ruth Meints is the Executive Director of the Omaha Conservatory of Music (OCM) since 2005 and authored the String Sprouts curriculum, a program for preschoolers in underserved areas. She teaches violin/viola at OCM and conducts frequent workshops in pedagogy and music education, integrating current neuroscience findings into music teaching. At OCM, she has created many music programs, such as Summer Institutes, Winter Festival Orchestra, a full music program at the St. Augustine Indian Mission School, and Inside the Mind of the Artist recital and master class series.  

In 2016, Ruth was given the Governor’s Arts Award for excellence in arts education in Nebraska. She has also presented a TedXOmaha talk entitled “Music, Preschoolers, and Poverty.”

Ruth received her Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance from University of Nebraska-Lincoln and her Master of Music degree with an emphasis in Suzuki pedagogy from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville under the mentorship of John Kendall.
