Event Description

This course will explore components of Bluegrass fiddling including: historical aspects, jamming, and fiddle techniques such as slides, improvised licks, double-stops, chopping, and bowings.
Suzuki teachers will learn how to incorporate fiddle tunes into their studio with ease, following the format used in “Fiddlin’ Favorites,” a series of books written by Lisa and Derek Deakins and licensed by the ISA.

Tuition includes both volumes of “Fiddlin’ Favorites”.

100% participation is required for course registration with the SAA.

Trainer Information

Derek Deakins

Dr. Derek Deakins is a fiddler, violinist, and registered Suzuki violin teacher originally from Kingsport, Tennessee. His musical journey began with Suzuki violin lessons at age five and has taken him around the world as a professional musician. Derek has performed all over the world in venues ranging from Madison Square Garden to the Grand Ole Opry.

Derek graduated from Belmont University (B.M. in Instrumental Music Education), East Carolina University (M.M. in Orchestral Conducting), and Liberty University (Doctorate in Music Education). Derek has performed with major recording artists including The Osborne Brothers, Mac Wiseman, Charlie Daniels, and Blake Shelton. He has made several television appearances and four solo recordings.
